VANCOUVER–Plans are afloat to use cruise ships to house tourists and Olympic staff in the face of a shortage of hotel rooms for the 2010 Winter Games.

Olympic organizers have formally issued a request for a charter vessel to be docked in nearby Squamish, B.C., during the Games to house a few hundred workers.

But with just over a year to go until the Olympics, it's uncertain whether there are enough boats to go around if more rooms are needed.

"You would presume that they had tied this down long ago," said Warren Gill, a transportation expert at Simon Fraser University, who noted 2010 cruise schedules are likely already published.
