About 500 workers at three potash mines owned by Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc. may strike to back demands in labour-contract negotiations.
Unionized workers, who voted Monday in favour of strike action, say they want a bigger share of soaring profit at the Saskatoon-based company, the world's biggest producer of potash by market value. The three mines produced 30 per cent of the company's total output, Potash Corp. said.
Potash's first-quarter net income almost tripled to a record $566 million from a year earlier as the highest-ever prices for corn, soybeans, rice and wheat spurred demand for fertilizer.
The workers are employed at the company's Allan, Cory and Patience Lake mines in Saskatchewan. Union members, who have been without a contract since the end of April, voted more than 96 per cent in favour of strike action, the union said.
