Volkswagen AG, Europe's biggest car maker, agreed to a 5.4 per cent wage increase for workers in its Mexican unit, averting a planned strike.

The strike was set to begin at noon yesterday. The Wolfsburg, Germany-based company produced 266,000 cars in Mexico in the first half of 2008, the company said yesterday.

The deal will affect 11,300 workers, who were originally seeking a 13 per cent pay increase, Mexico City-based El Financiero reported, without citing a source.
