STAFF REPORTER
A pedestrian was critically injured last night when a car hit him as he was jaywalking in the city’s northeast end.
Police say the 48-year-old man was crossing Warden Ave. about 100 metres north of Finch Ave. E. at around 9:30 p.m. when a northbound car hit him.
Toronto Police Sgt. Tim Burrows said the man was not at a marked crossing when he was hit.
"He was in the roadway,” Burrows said. “He did not have the right of way."
The man was taken to Sunnybrook hospital with head injuries, and remains there in critical condition.
The driver whose vehicle struck him was not injured.
Burrows said the man’s name has not been released because police are trying to contact his relatives in China.
A stretch of Warden Ave. remained closed for several hours following the accident.
Police are seeking witnesses, and urge anyone who saw the accident to call them at 416-808-1900. Crime Stoppers accepts anonymous tips by phone at 416-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.222tips.com.
