GO train riders faced delays and cancellations this morning after lightning damaged a signal box in Oshawa last night.

GO spokesperson Jessica Kosmack said trains out of Oshawa on the Lakeshore East line had to run slower than usual because they required clearance from a dispatch centre while the signals were being repaired.

While some westbound trains were delayed, others were cancelled entirely, which led to cancellations in eastbound trains heading into Toronto as well.

Once the repairs were completed, trains were running at normal speed by 8:15 a.m.

No delays were expected during this afternoon’s rush hour, Kosmack said.

By mid-morning, GO crews still did not know exactly where the lightning had hit. “It’s very unusual,” Kosmack said.
