A Mississauga daycare was in lockdown for two hours today after a man, believed to be an estranged stepfather, threatened to kill children and workers there.

Peel police responded to Tiny Treasure Mississauga Day Care Centre, on King St. W. in Cooksville, around 10:40 a.m. after a worker called 911 to report the incident.

The employee reported that a man approached two children and spoke to them through a fence. Police would not confirm that the man was a stepfather, but said that he was indirectly related to the children.

After a brief conversation, one of the children became visibly upset. One of the daycare workers intervened and denied the man access to the children, said Peel Const. J.P. Valade. The man became angry and threatened the staff member and approximately 60 children housed in the daycare.

Staff locked the doors and ordered everyone to stay inside, police said.

The man fled the scene. Police located and arrested him around 12:30 p.m., said Valade. Police did not find a weapon and no one was injured in the incident.

The man was arrested on two counts of uttering threats and is being held by police in advance of his bail hearing scheduled for tomorrow, Valade said.

The lockdown was lifted around 12:45 p.m.
