An employee of a Toronto hospital has been charged with defrauding the hospital of about $558,000 over two years.

The investigation began after a co-worker claimed to see an employee making cheques payable to herself, police said.

It's alleged the employee forged the signatures before depositing the cheques into personal bank accounts at TD Canada Trust and Bank of Nova Scotia.

Zita Rotar faces three charges including fraud over $5,000, forgery and uttering a forged document.

Police would not say which hospital was involved and were unclear about whether the suspect worked there until her arrest.

The fraud took place between January 2004 and January 2006.
