A Barrie police officer has been cleared of any wrongdoing after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a car being pursued by police.

The Special Investigations Unit stated the unnamed officer did not commit a criminal offence while attempting to stop the fleeing car.

Michael O'Keefe, 43, of Barrie, died of his injuries after he was struck by the car last May.

An officer driving a marked cruiser flicked on its emergency lights and chased a car he was attempting to stop.

The officer lost sight of the vehicle when it drove off and through several streets, until it struck O'Keefe, who was crossing the road.

Four SIU investigators probed the circumstances that led to the death, concluding the cruiser never "unduly pushed" the car or "otherwise prevented it from coming to a safe stop."

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries and deaths involving the police.
