A university goaltender was in fair condition in a hospital in Windsor, Ont., today after having his throat accidentally slashed by a skate during a game.
Kurt Jory of Brandon, Man., was hurt Saturday while playing in net for the Brock University Badgers during a road game against the Windsor Lancers.
The 21-year-old netminder suffered a severed vein in his neck when he was clipped by a skate during a goalmouth scramble in the third period.
The Badgers said Jory is expected to make a full recovery after undergoing surgery and will return to St. Catharines, Ont., where Brock is located, later this week.
The Canadian Hockey League requires players to wear neck guards, but Canadian Interuniversity Sport does not have a similar requirement.
Chief executive officer Marg McGregor said the CIS board of directors was briefed on the incident Monday.
She added that a CIS sport committee will look at the current equipment requirements and make a recommendation if it feels a change is necessary.
"It it's a change that would help protect student-athletes then that's something that needs to be looked at very seriously," she said.
