OPP officer clings to life after three died in house

WOODSTOCK–A carbon monoxide leak killed a dad and two children and left their mother, a 41-year-old Ontario Provincial Police officer, in hospital in critical condition, local police say.

But investigators were mum on details, including the source of the leak in the Chippewa Ave. bungalow. Police forced their way into the home Monday and found the bodies of Richard Hawkins, 40, daughter Cassandra, 14, and son Jordan, 12.

Const. Laurie Hawkins, a community resources officer at the Ingersoll OPP detachment, was revived at the scene and is now in Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital.

Neighbours and co-workers had become worried about the family, some of whom were last seen Thursday night.

Investigators wouldn't categorically state the deaths were accidental but gave no indication they thought otherwise. Nor would they say whether the home had carbon monoxide detectors or how Laurie Hawkins could have survived the fumes that killed the rest of her family.

Autopsies are scheduled for tomorrow.
