KANDAHAR–An Afghan general is replacing the controversial governor of Kandahar, who headed a government widely regarded as corrupt.
Asadullah Khalid has been replaced by Gen. Rahmatullah Raufi, who commands some of the best units of the Afghan National Army.
Raufi has served for three years as chief of army forces in five southern provinces, including Kandahar.
Khalid stayed on longer than expected when former foreign affairs minister Maxime Bernier committed a diplomatic gaffe in April by publicly calling for his ouster while the governor was still in office.
