LONDON–Buckingham Palace says Queen Elizabeth II has given Israeli President Shimon Peres an honorary knighthood.
The palace says the royal presented the Israeli head of state with the Order of St. Michael and St. George today.
The statesman then had private talks with Elizabeth's son Prince Charles, who recently celebrated his 60th birthday.
The order was founded in 1818. It is awarded to men and women of high office or to those who render important nonmilitary services abroad. Foreigners are eligible for honorary versions of the award.
Peres is wrapping up a nearly weeklong visit to Britain which included talks with the British prime minister and an address before both houses of Britain's parliament.
