ANKARA–Officials say an explosion has shut down a pipeline in southeastern Turkey that carries oil from Iraq to the Mediterranean.

No casualties were immediately reported.

Kurdish rebels have bombed the pipeline before and regional governor Mehmet Kiliclar says the explosion may have been deliberate.

The explosion occurred today near the town Midyat, 80 kilometres from the Iraqi border. The governor says a resulting fire was quickly brought under control.

The pipeline connects oil fields around the northern Iraqi city Kirkuk with the Turkish port Ceyhan.

Officials at Turkey's state pipeline company aren't commenting and it is not known when the pipeline will reopen.
