Thai police have identified two Canadians killed in a van crash Monday when their driver fell asleep on the highway from the capital Bangkok to Phuket.

David Hok Wing Yick, 48, and Robert Bowman, 63, were killed 700 kilometres into the 1,100-kilometre trip to Phuket island's airport, Maj.-Gen. Sunrajed Dhammadamrong, of the foreign affairs division of the Royal Thai Police, told the Star last night.

Yick, a Canadian citizen, lived in Hong Kong, while Bowman lived in Vancouver.

The two men were in Thailand on vacation.

Media reports said three Canadians and a Briton were also injured in the crash.

The driver of the van has been charged with negligence while driving a car causing death to another person, according to local police.

The crash victims were not part of the seniors' group that left Thailand in a Canadian government organized flight to Hong Kong early yesterday.

That group is expected to arrive at Toronto's Pearson airport today at 6:05 p.m.

They were on a cruise that departed Oct. 26 and was due back Nov. 26 but were delayed because of political protests that paralyzed Bangkok's airports.

Former NHL announcer Jiggs McDonald and his wife are part of the group.
