Re:Students drop cystic fibrosis

charity drive, Nov. 26

The noble goal of an equal-opportunity society is reached by helping people of all races, genders and ethnicities. Even if it were true that cystic fibrosis mainly affects white males, how could that possibly justify a refusal to raise funds for the charity? Is it wrong, too, to donate to breast and prostate cancer charities because they are gender-biased?

These Carleton students may believe that their decision to pull fundraising from Shinerama is based on equality, but it is based on outright bias. Given the terrible repercussions of the disease on young people and the drastic difference fundraising has made to their length and quality of life, this is hardly a charity to drop.
