Re:City plans five-cent

plastic bag fee, Nov. 27

The mayor is on the right track with his proposal for a 5-cent fee for plastic shopping bags. I have not taken a plastic bag in three years, and don't feel I'm missing anything. The issue is not recycling or reuse – it is over-consumption. There is no rational excuse for producing billions of plastic bags for Ontarians each year. Ireland's 34-cent levy on plastic bags was a big success, reducing plastic bags by about 1 billion per year. The plastics industry knows the gig is up – we are no longer willing to pick up after the mess they create. The bag charge is a great first step.
