Re:Mom dies shielding family

during knifing rampage, Dec. 1

My condolences are with Leslie Kelly's family. A violent crime such as this is wrought with overarching senselessness.

A lesson learned is that individuals with mental health issues should be treated on a continuous basis, instead of being allowed to stagnate in environments that may exacerbate their challenges. Instead of labeling the perpetrator as "nuts" or an indiscriminate murderer, perhaps we need to refocus our thinking toward preventing events like this in the future.

Social policy reform must take place in order to reverse the problem of minimal funding for proper rehabilitation services.
